Which Witch is Which in this Witch Hunt? Texas Senator goes after Grassroots Community Organizing Group ACORN

To: U.S. Senator John Cornyn

From: Eddie Griffin

Wednesday, October 15, 2008

Texas U.S. Sen. John Cornyn called for a nationwide criminal probe into recent voter registration efforts by ACORN, a grassroots community organizing group.

Another report says: Cornyn, R-Texas, sent U.S. Attorney General Michael Mukasey a letter Tuesday asking the Justice Department to investigate ACORN -- long a political target of Republicans — as a “criminal enterprise”.

ACORN website reports:

October 13, 2008, Miami, FL - U.S. Senator John McCain's recent attacks on the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) are puzzling given his historic support for the organization and its efforts on behalf of immigrant Americans. As recently as February 20, 2006, Senator McCain was the keynote speaker at an ACORN-sponsored Immigration Rally in Miami, Florida at Miami Dade College – Wolfson Campus.

Eddie Griffin sez:

This should serve notice to community organizers everywhere, especially those who engage in voter registration drives, this is what can happen whey modern day McCarthyists like John Cornyn stirs up a witch hunt as a political diversion.

Is there any doubt that presidential hopeful John McCain will use ACORN as a whipping boy to assail baseless voter fraud allegations in tonight’s debate? Hasn’t FOX News been priming the American public for this "red scare"? It will be John McCain’s duty to put one and one together and associate ACORN with Barack Obama’s campaign.

This garbage is as old as “Tricky Dick” Nixon and his dirty tricksters. I would assume the true beneficiary is not the American public, but the Republican Party.

Where is the voter registration fraud, John Cornyn? There is none, other than those manufactured for the benefit of the Republican Party. Why didn’t you just wait for Mickey Mouse to show up at the polls to vote, then and there make him prove his identity? And if he cannot, then that is “attempted fraud”. If he successfully votes, and is found out later, then that is “fraud”. Otherwise, Mr. Cornyn, you have no crime and no probable cause for suspicion.

Another report states:

In recent weeks, conservatives have escalated their attacks on ACORN, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now. Conservative lawmakers were able to remove a provision aimed at aiding low-income housing programs from the Bush administration's $700 billion economic bailout bill by calling it a "slush fund" for ACORN. Before that, conservatives blamed ACORN for "precipitating the subprime crisis." And last week, they alleged that the "purpose" of ACORN is to engage in voter fraud. However, as columnist Joel McNally correctly noted, the "underlying motive for attacking ACORN" seems to be that it is the "nation's largest grassroots community organization of low- and moderate-income people."

NAACP Chairman Julian Bond from today's ACORN press conference on voter suppression tactics, held at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. The Chairman and Kathryn Kolbert, President of People for the American Way, joined with ACORN leaders at the National Press Club to condemn recent Republican attacks.

Eddie Griffin sez:

What John Cornyn fails to realize is this: If ACORN registered me, and my name was Mickey Mouse, how could the register determine if it was true or false?

Fact is: it’s neither his responsibility nor his business to verify the validity of an application, nor is he God who can look inside to heart and see fraud and deceive, to know who I really am. Whatever I put on the registration, it is up to the elections administration to approve or disapprove, not an ACORN volunteer.

All of this is not aimed at preventing voter fraud. In fact, a real criminal investigation may snag some unwitting McCain operatives working under the cloak of darkness in the name of ACORN. (Remember, they accused Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a communist and, supposedly, had all the evidence to prove it.)

Anyone can sign up as Mickey Mouse, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they will be approved or allowed to vote.

No, it is not truth that you want, Mr. Cornyn. But, rather, you want scandal. And, even more, I suspect it will be used in one of McCain’s lines in tonight’s debate.

Your opponent Rick Noriega should take you by the throat for fanning the flames of this witch hunt. Not that you are dishonest, or anything like that. It's just that you are gullibly stupid for listening to yourself talk and believing what you say.

Why do you want to mess with grassroots organizers, like me, anyway?
